  2. entertainment at Las Vegas and Reno casinos. 
  3. The building of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s 
  4. provided the water and power needed for the 
  5. growth of Las Vegas. Oil was discovered in 
  6. 1954, but gold exceeds all other mineral 
  7. production. Tourism and gambling now generate 
  8. more than half of the state's income.
